Epilogue

David

The summer evening was warm, the sun low enough to give the darkening shadows razor edges. By comparison, the light from the underpass ahead seemed pale and barely there, almost dreamlike.

David rolled his shoulders back, feeling the fabric of his T-shirt pull taut over his chest, and squeezed his hand around the key in his pocket. He was going to do this. He really was—however fast his heart was beating at the thought.

Slowly, he made his way down the steps into the underpass.

It was hard to believe it had been six months since he’d met Jess in this very spot. Was it strange that he could no longer remember what his life had been like without Jess in it? Not that he wanted to. He wanted to wrap their lives together, the seams of their existence overlapping endlessly.

Yesterday had been David’s last day in Sheffield. He’d spent most of the day with Jonny, and they’d talked about how different next year was going to be out on placement, and they’d talked about Jess. By now David was sure Jonny genuinely liked Jess. Jess had been up to Sheffield a fair few times and they’d talked, the three of them—drunken, honest conversations. So when Jonny had agreed that what David was about to do was the right thing, David felt the weight lift.

On the last step, he paused and listened. The music being played farther along the underpass was so familiar it made his heart ache. He loved listening to Jess play. He could listen all day.

Jess wasn’t busking because he needed the money. He still worked for Louie, and he played at lots of Louie’s events too, but every so often, in the weeks they were apart, he sometimes came down here and played. It was as though he’d grown attached to the place. David had grown kind of attached to it too—it was why he was here.

The underpass was a busy thoroughfare, and David wished it were quieter or that he’d come along later or… Nothing is going to make this easier and less terrifying, he told himself.

A small crowd had gathered around Jess. David walked slowly toward them. Even after all these months, he wondered at how lucky he was. Jess was stunning—all angles and sharp edges, swirling ink and silver-haired mysteriousness. With his head tilted back and his eyes closed, he appeared so far away, so lost in the music he was creating—no wonder that girl had taken the opportunity to whip away his guitar case full of money all those months ago.

Almost the second David stopped in front of him, Jess’s eyes flicked open. It was as though he had some extrasensory perception of David’s proximity.

“David?” he breathed, managing to look at once both shocked and elated.

For a second David lost what he wanted to say, transfixed by the beautiful grey eyes blinking at him.

Shoving his guitar off his lap none too gently, Jess scrambled upright.

“Oh my God! Way to surprise a guy,” he said before throwing himself into David’s waiting arms.
